Available apprenticeships and traineeships
There are more than 100 different apprenticeships available in NSW. Apprenticeships generally last four years and cover traditional trade areas such as building and construction, hairdressing, cooking, the automotive industry, engineering and manufacturing.
There are also over 600 traineeship vocations available to provide employment and training opportunities in virtually all industries including multimedia, information technology, sport and recreation, hospitality, retail and agriculture.

Apprenticeships and traineeships are available to anyone of working age, and do not require any entry qualifications. Apprentices and trainees can be school-leavers, people re-entering the workforce or workers simply wishing to change careers.
There are citizenship and residency status requirements that need to be met.
Training for apprentices and trainees
There are a number of training options:
- both apprenticeships and traineeships are offered full-time and part-time
- workers currently employed in the workplace can access apprenticeships and traineeships
- traineeships involving all-on-the-job training are available in a number of industries
- school based part-time apprenticeships and traineeships are available to allow school students to undertake vocational training in conjunction with their HSC studies
- trainee apprenticeships are only available in industries such as building and construction and furnishing that require more flexible working arrangements
- group training companies employ apprentices and trainees and place them with host employers
- group training provides businesses which may not be able to employ an apprentice or trainee for the full term of the training an opportunity to host apprentices or trainees for varying periods.
