I can no longer afford to keep my apprentice or trainee

A downturn in business activity could mean that it is not financially viable for you to continue the employment of your apprentice or trainee.

A lack of suitable work could mean that your apprentice or trainee will not be eligible for their qualification because not all competencies will be achieved.

Options

  • Reduce the hours of work - partial suspension of the apprenticeship or traineeship.
  • Change traineeship from full-time to part-time.
  • Find another employer who can provide employment and the right training (The Continuing Apprentices Placement Services may provide help to retrenched apprentices and trainees).
  • Suspend employment and training for a period to cover the anticipated downturn.   This can be extended.
  • Cancel the training contract (retrench the apprentice or trainee) if the above alternatives are not possible.

All of these options require a change to the training contract.  Contact your Australian Apprenticeship Centre  (AAC) for assistance.

Group Training Organisations

A Group Training Organisations employ apprentices and trainees and host them with employers.

They can be an employment option for your apprentice or trainee if you have to retrench them or if you would like to keep the apprentice or trainee in the workplace but cannot afford a permanent apprentice or trainee.
