How can I arrange a trade or proficiency certificate for my employee
There are a number of cerficates issued at the end of an apprenticeship or traineeship, and issued to people applying for trade and skills recognition.
Certificates are automatically issued to apprentices and trainees. This happens when State Training Services is notified that the apprentice or trainee has completed the formal training with a registered training organisation and the on-the-job training in the workplace with the employer.

Which Certificate?
Proficiency Certificate
- awarded to apprentices and trainees who have successfully completed both the on-the-job training in the workplace and the formal training with a registered training organisation.
Craft Certificate
- awarded to apprentices who have successfully completed the on-the-job training in the workplace but not the formal training.
Completion Certificate
- awarded to trainees who have successfully completed the on-the-job training in the workplace but not the formal training.
Upgrading your certificate
A Craft Certificate or a Completion Certificate can be upgraded to a Certificate of Proficiency if your apprentice or trainee subsequently achieves all the competencies in the training plan and are awarded the appropriate qualification by their registered training organisation.
Employers often want their employees to have a Proficiency Certificate to
- meet licensing standards
- obtain an ISO quality endorsement
- meet contract or tender requirements
- have a well qualified workforce.
To upgrade a Craft Certificate or Completion Certificate to a full Certificate of Proficiency your employee must have been awarded the appropriate qualification for their apprenticeship or traineeship by a registered training organisation.
You or your employee can contact your local State Training Services (ph 13 28 11) office to arrange the issue of the Certificate of Proficiency. Your employee will need to provide a copy of their RTO qualification to State Training Services.
