Community Services - Education Support - Traineeship

The traineeship vocation of Community Services - Education Support has been varied to include an additional qualification and a pilot school based traineeship.

Qualifications, structure and packaging

CHC08 Community Services Training Package version 3 includes 74 qualifications ranging from Certificate I to Vocational Graduate Diploma. Two qualifications support traineeship pathways. Their details are below:

Job descriptions

Certificate III level trainees will learn to provide assistance and support to teachers as they facilitate students’ learning.

Trainees may work in a range of educational settings including public and independent schools and community education colleges.

As core competencies, trainees will learn to:

  • support behaviour of children and young people
  • comply with legislative, policy and industrial requirements in the education environment
  • contribute to student education in all developmental domains
  • work with diversity in the education environment
  • communicate with students
  • work effectively in an education team
  • comply with school administrative requirements
  • contribute to occupational health and safety processes.

Trainees will also undertake elective units guided by the type of service delivery and work placement.

Certificate IV level trainees will work in a range of educational settings including public and independent schools and community education colleges. They will provide assistance and support to teachers to facilitate students' learning under broad based supervision. You will learn how to perform with a moderate level of autonomy, and could provide supervision or leadership to other staff or volunteers.

At the core level, they will learn to:

  • support behaviour of children and young people
  • identify and respond to children and young people at risk
  • comply with legislative, policy and industrial requirements in the education environment
  • work with diversity in the education environment
  • collect and analyse information to inform work strategies
  • assist in facilitation of student learning
  • use high-level communication skills in the education workplace
  • contribute to continuous improvement processes within the education environment
  • contribute to occupational health and safety processes.

Trainees will also undertake elective units guided by the type of service delivery and work placement. Where work involves a specific focus on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and/or culturally diverse clients or communities, particular electives are recommended.

Competency based completion

On successful completion of the relevant qualification, parties may apply to the Commissioner for Vocational Training for completion of the traineeship. For more information and an application form, click here.

Industrial arrangements

Applications under the Apprenticeship and Traineeship Act 2001 to establish any traineeship whether full-time, part-time or school based will not be approved unless the Commissioner for Vocational Training is satisfied that appropriate industrial arrangements are in place.

The Community Services and Health Industry Training Advisory Body advise that trainees may be employed under the following awards:

A new national industrial relations system

All New South Wales private sector employers and employees are now covered by the Fair Work national workplace relations system.

Employment screening

Workers and learners undertaking work or placements in facilities within NSW health facilities must comply with Employment Screening Policy Directive PD2008_029.

Immunisation

Workers and learners undertaking work placement in NSW Health facilities must comply with the assessment, screening and vaccination requirements of Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination Against Specified Infections Diseases PD2007_006.

School based traineeship

CHC30808 Certificate III in Education Support is suitable for delivery in schools under the “Indigenous Student Teachers in Training - School Based Traineeship” pilot project.

Indigenous Student Teachers in Training - School Based Traineeship pilot project

The Illawarra South East Region school region of the Department of Education and Communities sought support for Indigenous high school students in the area to undertake preliminary student teacher training via a school based traineeship.

CHC30808 Certificate III in Education Support was identified as a suitable school based traineeship qualification and the Indigenous Student Teachers in Training - School Based Traineeship pilot project was established to implement the traineeship.

Eleven Departmental high schools and 54 primary schools in the Illawarra South East Region school region will participate in the pilot. The traineeship will only be available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students attending a participant high school, known as the home school. The project’s management committee will select the trainees. Participant primary schools will employ the trainees.

Traineeship approval requirements

Applications to establish CHC30808 Certificate III in Education Support school based part-time traineeships must include evidence that the senior school student has been selected for the traineeship by the Indigenous Student Teachers in Training - School Based Traineeship pilot project management committee.

The full training plan submitted with the application should include elective units specific to the work placement.

Traineeship arrangements

The CHC30808 Certificate III in Education Support school based part-time traineeship will be delivered under the Indigenous Student Teachers in Training - School Based Traineeship pilot project.

Trainees will be attending a nominated high school.

Trainees will be employed by a Group Training Company, with nominated primary schools as the host employers.

The CHC30808 Certificate III in Education Support course of study will be undertaken in the senior secondary school years and will contribute towards the trainee’s Higher School Certificate studies.

The HSC Board Endorsed Course of 240 hours plus 120 hours extension will qualify the trainee for the CHC30808 Certificate III Education Support qualification.

TAFE NSW Illawarra Institute will deliver the course with potential for Karabar Distance Education Centre to assist with training via distance mode. A mixture of distance delivery modes may be used.

The traineeship term will be 24 months part-time and completed by 31 December of the Higher School Certificate year.

Traineeship implementation

The project’s management committee will select the pilot cohort of students.

The Group Training Organisation will employ a program officer with the sole responsibility for the Indigenous Student Teachers in Training project.

The Regional Managers, State Training Services Illawarra and South East NSW Regional Office and Aboriginal Programs Portfolio will brief the Group Training Organisation, prospective host employers and other participants on their responsibilities and obligations under the traineeships.

On-the-job, trainees will be supported by the supervising classroom teacher, Aboriginal Education Officer, Aboriginal Education Consultative Group representative and the Group Training Organisation’s Indigenous Student Teachers in Training project program officer.

Off-the-job, trainees will be supported by their home school’s mentoring and counselling and assistance with distance course delivery. At each home school, there will be a head teacher responsible for the program, a year adviser an Aboriginal Education Officer and a Careers Adviser to assist trainees, as well as support from the local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group.

School based

CHC30808 Certificate III in Education Support

School based part-time trainees will undertake a minimum of 100 days on-the-job training across a 24 month period within which trainees shall be required to demonstrate competencies relevant to the Vocational Training Order.

Additional requirements School based trainees must be participants in the Indigenous Student Teachers in Training - School Based Traineeship pilot project being conducted in the Illawarra region of New South Wales.
