National Broadband Network – Help Build the Future

What is the National Broadband Network?

The National Broadband Network (NBN) is a Commonwealth project that will see 90% of Australian dwellings connected to superfast fibre optic cable that will reach download speeds of 100 Megabytes per second. The remaining 10% of dwellings will achieve very fast download speeds using wireless and satellite technology.

Building the NBN will take over eight years and will require thousands of new workers with skills in plant operations, telecommunications, electrotechnology, Information and Communications Technology and many other fields.

Now is the perfect time to think about learning new skills or upgrade your existing skills and work on one of the biggest, most exciting projects in Australian history.

Want to work on the National Broadband Network?

The construction and deployment of the NBN will require thousands of new workers with specific skills, and maintaining, managing and utilising the potential of the NBN. After it is built it will require more trained workers again – perhaps in fields that don’t even exist yet!

The NBN is the biggest infrastructure project in Australian history and will support an estimated 25,000 jobs a year. Some of the key jobs that will be required for the roll out include:

  • Plant Operators
  • Traffic Controllers
  • Telecommunications cablers
  • Electricians
  • Electrical linesworkers

Sound like a good idea? What next?

Building the NBN is a massive undertaking that will require workers with the right skills for the job. If you are interested in training that could lead to work in some of the jobs above, or are interested in broader opportunities working on the NBN, you could contact training providers who offer courses which could lead to employment on the construction and deployment of the NBN.

Companies who are awarded contracts by NBN Co. for the construction of the NBN may offer traineeships and apprenticeships which combine practical work and relevant training. These programs are usually advertised on company websites.

State Training Services manages vocational training in NSW by subsidising training in priority skills areas. Find out which courses are available and which training providers are approved to deliver training.

These are available

  • for existing workers and jobseekers, and
  • as full or part qualifications.

Search for a course and view

  • the qualification name
  • the course name and details
  • details of registered training organisations providing the course.
