State Training Services is supporting over 80 NSW VET practitioners to attain the qualification in the period 2010-2012.

About the course

This highly regarded course enables participants to:

  • embed sustainability principles into learning programs and teaching practice, and
  • facilitate delivery and assessment strategies to support change for sustainability.

Graduates of the course will become leaders of education for sustainability in the vocational education and training sector and mentors to other teachers.

The Vocational Graduate Certificate in Education and Training for Sustainability (22060VIC) consists of three units of competency:

  • VU20128 - Develop a sector-specific education for sustainability teaching and learning program
  • VU20129 - Implement a sector-specific education for sustainability teaching and learning program
  • VU20130 - Provide advanced facilitation to implement an education for sustainability initiative.

The course is delivered over 12 months through a combination of 6 x two-day face-to-face workshops supported by regular online learning sessions. Participants engage in action learning projects and participatory learning activities.

Note: Intending participants need to be practising VET teachers, assessors or managers and must have the capacity to deliver a green skills course as part of their VGC assessment.

About the courses already in progress

Five groups of NSW VET practitioners have already completed the Vocational Graduate Certificate in Education and Training for Sustainability, with a further intake planned for 2012.

The first group was drawn from the Community College sector and started in October 2010. A scholarship program was organised in partnership with the Adult Community Education unit of the Department of Education and Communities.

The second group of VET practitioners from public and private RTOs began their course in February 2011. This course has an energy efficiency focus to support trainers who have a role in improving the uptake of energy efficiency in the workforce.

The third, fourth and fifth groups commenced their studies in July 2011. Two of these groups attended workshops in Sydney and the other group was based in Newcastle. Our aim is to have more groups in future from regional and rural NSW.
