Bulletin Information

In this Commissioner's Information Bulletin two Vocational Training Orders (VTOs) are varied to update four qualification codes and fully transition from PMA08v5 Chemical, Hydrocarbons and Refining Training Package to PMAv1 Chemical, Hydrocarbons and Refining Training Package.

Process Plant Operations Certificate II trainees operate production equipment or undertake similar roles directly producing products. The operator would apply a breadth and depth of knowledge to a defined range of situations and would be expected to apply this knowledge to solve a defined range of problems.
Process Plant Operation Certificate III trainees are advanced operators and operations technicians who use production equipment to directly produce products. At this level, operators/technicians would undertake more advanced operations and would apply their knowledge to anticipate problems. They would be expected to solve a range of foreseen and unforeseen problems, using product and process knowledge to develop solutions to problems which do not have a known solution or a solution recorded in the procedures.
Trainees with a Certificate II or III level qualification may work in one of the following sectors:

  • fine chemicals
  • heavy chemicals
  • petrochemicals
  • polymer manufacture
  • hydrocarbon extraction
  • hydrocarbon transmission
  • hydrocarbon processing/refining
  • minerals processing/refining
  • metalliferous processing/refining
  • metals smelting/processing
  • other related areas.

Process Plant Technology Certificate IV trainees are plant technicians who will be involved in solving complex problems which require theoretical knowledge, combined with an understanding of the production process and equipment across the plant. Trainees will develop their technical knowledge including their ability to work independently and conduct technical problem solving according to the needs of the work in the chemical, hydrocarbons and refining industries.
Process Plant Technology Diploma level trainees are technologists or para-professionals who may have worked their way up through the chemical, hydrocarbons or refining certificate qualifications or who have entered the industry at this level, either from another industry or trade occupation. Technologist will analyse performance and failure in equipment and products and will assist in the development on new and modified products.
Trainees with a Certificate IV or Diploma level qualification may work in one of the following sectors:

  • fine chemicals
  • heavy chemicals
  • petrochemicals
  • polymer manufacture
  • hydrocarbon extraction
  • hydrocarbon transmission
  • hydrocarbon processing/refining
  • minerals processing/refining
  • metalliferous processing/refining
  • metals smelting/processing
  • other related area

  • PMA20116 Certificate II in Process Plant Operations
    • 12 months or until relevant competencies are achieved
  • PMA30116 Certificate III in Process Plant Operations by direct entry
    • 24 months or until relevant competencies are achieved
  • PMA30116 Certificate III in Process Plant Operations when the trainee holds PMA20116 Certificate II in Process Plant Operations
    • 18 months or until relevant competencies are achieved
Part-time:

  • PMA40116 Certificate IV in Process Plant Technology by direct entry
    • 36 months or until relevant competencies are achieved
  • PMA40116 Certificate IV in Process Plant Technology when the trainee holds PMA30116 Certificate III in Process Plant Operations
    • 24 months or until relevant competencies are achieved
  • PMA50116 Diploma of Process Plant Technology by direct entry
    • 24 months or until relevant competencies are achieved
  • PMA50116 Diploma of Process Plant Technology when the trainee holds PMA40116 Certificate IV in Process Plant Technology
    • 18 months or until relevant competencies are achieved

Probationary periods Where the nominal term is:
  • up to and including 24 months - 2 months
