Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarships - Nominations for 2018 now closed.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Skills John Barilaro is encouraging hardworking first-year apprentices who are experiencing financial or other personal hardship to apply for a $15,000 Bert Evans Scholarship.

Mr Barilaro said applications for Bert Evans Scholarships which are worth $5000 a year over three years, are now open.

"The Bert Evans scholarships assist apprentices who are dealing with hardship in their financial circumstances or family situations by providing extra support to help them successfully complete their training," Mr Barilaro said.

"As well as hardship, recipients must also show aptitude and a positive attitude towards their work and training to be eligible for a scholarship.

"They may be sole supporters of their family, live away from home with no family support, or be travelling hundreds of kilometres to attend their training.

"We want to back our apprentices and help them on the road to success, so I encourage any locals who meet the criteria to apply now for a scholarship."

Mr Barilaro said more students, parents and employers were recognising the value of vocational education and training (VET) to deliver solid career skills that are in high demand in the community.

"A career through VET can transform lives and we want to see people overcome financial or personal hardship through our VET system to set themselves up for a positive and rewarding life," Mr Barilaro said.

"These scholarships are open to both female and male apprentices and have already helped hundreds of young people succeed in their career and make a positive contribution to their families and communities.

"So I urge local training providers and employers to encourage deserving apprentices to apply for a Bert Evans scholarship," he said.

Apprentices who started their training between 1 March 2017 and 30 May 2018 are eligible to apply for this year's scholarships.

The Bert Evans Scholarships were launched in 2014 as part of a $2.4 million program and to date 397 have been awarded. Applications for 2018 scholarships are open until Wednesday 30th May 2018.

These scholarships were named after the late Bert Evans AO who was a passionate advocate of our VET sector for over 30 years.
