NSW executives visit Broken Hill

Senior executives from Training Services NSW visited Broken Hill on 23 and 24 March to meet with local partner agencies and organisations in the surrounding districts.

During the visit the delegation, led by David Collins, Executive Director Training Services NSW, met with staff from TAFE Western, Robinson College, representatives of RDA, Far West Health, Lawrence Engineering and our New Careers for Aboriginal People (NCAP) program.

One of the highlights of the visit to Broken Hill was meeting with Anthony Kelly, a Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarship recipient at Lawrence Engineering, a family business that currently has eight apprentices and is committed to trade training. The scholarship has helped to support Anthony to further his skills development and prepare for employment opportunities.

David and the Training Services NSW executives also had a positive meeting with Keith Ferguson who is working on various employment projects under the New Careers for Aboriginal People program (NCAP). These projects include, local mining operations, new wind farm, and proposed water pipe infrastructure works, as well as tourist guide operations in the Mutawintji National Park.

Training Services NSW has entered a new phase of its commitment to both the participation of Aboriginal people in vocational education and training (VET) and the number of Aboriginal staff employed by Training Services NSW.

This will see more than 20 new positions appointed to Aboriginal staff across each of the nine Training Services NSW regional offices, ensuring that each regional office will have three designated positions for Aboriginal staff.

These new staff and a re-alignment of the Training Services NSW regional offices focus on the participation of Aboriginal people in VET will increase the momentum and support behind the promotion of VET participation by Aboriginal people.

Complementing the regional emphasis on participation, Training Services NSW has appointed a Manager Aboriginal Initiatives to be located in Oxford Street and an Administrative Assistant (Jean Blair) whose role is multi-faceted and includes the development of Aboriginal initiatives.
