Elsa Dixon - Business Studies Traineeship
"I now have skills" - End of Traineeship testimonial
I started my school based indigenous traineeship in February 2014 as a Year 11 student at Wauchope High School. Before starting the traineeship, I elected to do Business Studies as one of my HSC subjects at school, but lack of interest meant this course was not offered. I was disappointed about this, but fortunately my careers advisor told me about the Indigenous school based traineeship being offered at Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and so I jumped at the opportunity.
When I commenced my traineeship, I didn't really have an understanding of how the world inside an organisation worked and my business skills were limited. Over the 2 year program I learnt so much - I now have skills that I can take anywhere I go in life. I learnt how to prioritise my work, manage my time, and build relationships with people. I got experience with business systems and built up my organisational skills.
The HSC component of my course was done via distance education. I found distance studies difficult to get used to but it helped having an employer that I could go to each week to ask questions and get practical experience in the areas I was studying.
I have now completed the required 100 days of work at Council. My traineeship enabled me to get a range of experience, some of the highlights for me were:
- Youth Week
- Naidoc Week
- Development and building applications
- Council's staff development day
- Attending Aboriginal Land Council meetings
- Food safety compliance
- Public health inspections
- Event support for staff training
- Human resources
- Ranger patrols.
The events I helped with and attended, the inspections I went on, the records I handled and the people I worked with helped me appreciate the variety of services Council deliver.
Through this experience I have grown and matured a lot. I am ready for my first full time job and have some office skills and experience now that I can promote to future employers. I am grateful to Council, my teachers and traineeship support agencies for this opportunity. I would recommend a traineeship with Council to anyone.
