Patron of the NSW Training Awards
Mr Albert (Bert) C. Evans AO
Patron of the NSW Training Awards and NSW Apprenticeships Ambassador
Bert Evans spent a lifetime supporting vocational education and training and industry in NSW. His advocacy for improving apprenticeships and traineeships was relentless and at the forefront of leading vocational education and training initiatives in NSW.
Appointed the inaugural Patron of the NSW Training Awards and NSW Apprenticeships Ambassador in July 2013, he continued his support to vocational education and training by engaging with industry for the increased take-up of apprenticeships and traineeships.
Before this Bert served as Chairman of the Board of Vocational Education and Training from 1996 until March 2013. During this time he oversaw a number of research and innovation projects and initiatives including The Changing Nature of Work, Green Skills - Skills for Sustainability and A Fair Deal: Apprentices and their Employers in NSW, which was one of the largest and most comprehensive studies in Australia.
Earlier in his extensive career Bert was Chief Executive of the Metal Trades Industry Association, now the Australian Industry Group, for 15 years.
In recognition of Bert Evans achievements and service to industry and the vocational education and training sector, the then Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli launched the Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarships in May 2014 in his honour.
Some months earlier he was awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the Australian Training Awards in November 2013 in Perth. This award is the highest accolade bestowed in the VET sector.
Bert was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1984, and was further honoured in 1996 when he was made an Officer of the Order. Bert was also awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science in Economics from the University of Sydney in 1993.
