Job descriptions

The Electricity Supply Industry - Transmission, Distribution and Rail Sector conveys electricity from the generating power stations to the consumer. The main activities of the industry are installation, servicing, maintenance, diagnosis and repair of electrical conduction and cabling systems, apparatus and equipment in relation to distribution, transmission and rail traction networks.

Apprenticeships

Jobs supported by ESI - Power Systems - Distribution Cable Jointing apprenticeships consist of:

  • installing underground cables and associated equipment for the distribution and rail industry
  • the laying, installation and maintenance of de-energised Low Voltage (LV) and High Voltage (HV) underground polymeric cables
  • the laying, installation and maintenance of energised cables and or LV and HV paper insulted cables
  • the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment.

Jobs supported by ESI - Power Systems - Distribution Overhead apprenticeships consist of:

  • installing, maintaining and inspecting poles, structures and associated hardware used on poles and structures
  • installing and maintaining electrical equipment, conductors and cables used in the powerline industry
  • stringing overhead lines and cables
  • using support plant and equipment to undertake these tasks in an environmentally concerned fashion.

Jobs supported by ESI - Power Systems - Rail Traction apprenticeships consist of:

  • the installation, maintenance and inspection of overhead poles/structures, conductors and cables and rail traction wiring systems including associated equipment used on these structures
  • the installation and maintenance of the overhead traction configuration
  • the installation and maintenance of bonds as well as the operation of the rail traction height access equipment
  • stringing overhead lines and cables associated with the trams and trains.

Jobs supported by ESI - Power Systems Substations apprenticeships are associated with:

  • the maintenance of HV power systems, including circuit breakers and transformers.
  • carrying out of substation, switching, inspection and the diagnosing and rectification of faults.
  • the installation of HV plant and equipment.
  • the maintenance and commissioning of discrete protection and control systems.

Jobs supported by Power Systems - Transmission Overhead apprenticeships consist of:

  • installing, repairing and maintaining high voltage overhead lines and cables carrying electricity to domestic, commercial and industrial users and electric train services
  • operate plant and equipment near live electrical conductors/apparatus
  • install and maintain poles/structures and associated hardware
  • inspect overhead structures and electrical apparatus (towers).

Traineeships

Jobs for trainees in ESI - Assets National Broadband Network Cabling support the installation of national broadband network cabling on electricity supply industry assets following prescribed procedures and installation processes.
Duties may include:

  • erection and maintenance of NBN network infrastructure cabling
  • stringing of cable
  • establishment and reinstatement of the worksite such as basic excavation work.

Jobs for traineeships in ESI - Assets Inspection support managing assets in capital intensive industries such as power transmission and inspecting and maintaining the assets in remote places, in accordance with local government legislation and industry guidelines and codes of practice.
Duties may include:

  • complying with sustainability, environmental and incidental response policies and procedures
  • working safely near live electrical apparatus as a non-electrical worker
  • operating asset inspection plant, machinery and equipment near live electrical apparatus
  • inspecting and treat poles and inspection of electrical apparatus
  • identifying and interpreting characteristics of electrical apparatus associated with power industry assets

Jobs for trainees in ESI - Power Systems at the Diploma level occur in design, protection/testing and system operation.
Design:

  • preparation and management of detail construction plans for electrical system infrastructure
  • designing overhead, underground, substations and or public lighting systems
  • development of planned outages strategies and or the investigation of quality supply issues

Protection/testing:

  • testing, maintaining and commissioning metering schemes
  • distributing field devices
  • maintaining and commissioning network protection and control systems (interdependent)
  • installing and maintaining power systems communication equipment.

System operation:

  • development of LV and HV distribution switching programs and transmission switching programs
  • coordinate LV distribution networks and HV distribution and sub transmission networks.

Jobs for trainees in ESI - Power Systems at the Advanced Diploma level occur in three specific areas:
Design:

  • preparation and management of detail construction plans for electrical system infrastructure
  • designing of customer substations
  • analysis and appraisal of fault and outage data
  • designing of overhead and underground transmission systems
  • review of asset management strategies.

Protection/testing:

  • maintaining network protection control systems
  • conducting of evaluation of primary plant
  • conducting evaluations of power systems faults
  • undertaking project management of substation augmentation and maintenance.

System operation:

  • management of HV distribution and sub transmission and or transmission network demand
  • development of crisis management plans, management of network faults, critical events and or control of generating plant.

Jobs for trainees in ESI - Power Systems Operations at the Diploma and Advanced Diploma acquire additional skills and knowledge needed for a career in system operations.

Jobs supported by ESI - Transmission Line Assembly traineeships consist of:

  • assisting in the establishment and reinstatement of the transmission towers
  • assisting to assemble and erect transmission towers and structures.
  • assembling hardware used on towers
  • stringing transmission overhead conductors prior to them being tensioned
  • basic excavation work.

Jobs supported by ESI - Vegetation Control traineeships consist of:

  • preparing assessment control measures that encompass job safety assessment
  • identifying broad environmental values of sites, potential hazards
  • implementing consultation and notification processes associated with sites and categorisation of sites as per legislative and regulatory codes
  • assessing trees for defects and hazards prior to climbing, preparation of climbing equipment and understand aerial emergency rescue procedures.
