Tarni's 'just in time' mentoring support

Tarni Jarrett has now completed a Certificate III in Business Administration traineeship whilst employed by Complete Staff Solutions and hosted to Lismore Fracture clinic.

Photo of Tarni JarrettTarni’s story is much like that of many young people who are starting out in  the workforce and experience barriers and challenges they need to tackle. Tarni had been in her traineeship for six months and was struggling in her personal and professional life, these factors were impacting on her work performance, her relationships within her workplace and personally affecting her self esteem.

Work was tough, travelling each day from Ballina to Lismore was difficult and suffering from anxiety made this experience a bigger challenge. Tarni’s realtionship with her supervisor was very strained and they had reached a stage where there was a real possibility of Tarni not completing the traineeship.

Tarni started to feel isolated and with a number of staff changes was not coping and had decided she was going to quit. Fortunately for her, her supervisor contacted Training Services NSW and requested an Aboriginal mentor to assist Tarni and this is where her journey began. Leanne Philips is a Way Ahead mentor from the North Coast and she was engaged to support Tarni.

Leanne and Tarni talked a lot about the current situation and commenced putting in place a plan to address them. Moving forward with the additional support from her mentor, Tarni started to develop her confidence and communication skills, and was able to bring her relationship with her supervisor back on track. This in turn gave Tarni a vision of a finish line, and increased her confidence in knowing that other opportunities were going to open up for her on completion of the traineeship.

Six months after completion of the traineeship, Tarni has now gained a full time position as a medical receptionist at a practice based in Ballina and she is over the moon.

Tarni states ‘in the end, it was this additional support in the workplace that provided me a happy positive experience and this gave me the confidence to succeed.  I would have quit if my supervisor hadn’t contacted Training Services NSW and engaged Leanne through The Way Ahead for Aboriginal People mentoring program. For me, the mentoring support was ‘just in time’.
