Refugee Support Initiatives
The refugee support initiatives are designed to support refugees through access to fee-free training under Smart and Skilled and provide employment support aimed at maximising their contribution to our State through achieving long-term skilled employment.
The refugee support initiatives consist of four elements:
Non-English language materials will provide an introduction to the vocational education and training (VET) system in NSW, processes relating to skills recognition, and give individuals a step-by-step guide that will support them in exploring their training options and finding courses and providers of their choice.
A NSW-based overseas skills assessment and advisory service will assist those whose overseas skills and qualifications may not have been recognised in Australia.
Fee-free training is available under Smart and Skilled for full qualification courses up to Certificate IV level, including Foundation Skills courses that focus on language, literacy, numeracy and employability skills development. Short courses comprising skills-sets or single units of competency can be accessed under the part qualifications program.
The Refugee Employment Support Program will help refugees and asylum seekers in Western Sydney and the Illawarra to develop career plans, determine the skills and qualifications they need and link them to education and training opportunities to find sustainable and meaningful employment.
